By  |  0 Comments
  • Midfielder Martin Chrien gave Slovakia the lead in the first half with a header from a corner
  • Alfie Mawson got England back on level terms when he pounced on his own rebound early in the second half
  • Nathan Redmond put the Young Lions ahead when he finished a swift attack, cutting in off the left to fire home

Nathan Redmond’s celebration showed how much this tournament means to England’s Young Lions. Arms outstretched, eyes wide, this is no end of season jolly for this group of young men.

Going in 1-0 down at half-time courtesy of Martin Chien’s headed opener, Aidy Boothroyd’s side were facing elimination from these European Championships. An embarrassing failure for England’s most high-profile age group.

Alfie Mawson levelled to provide some hope before a true moment of quality from James Ward-Prowse, a beautiful switch of play, gave Redmond the platform to make himself a hero. It was stage the Southampton winger would not freeze on.
