Wallabies great Toutai Kefu is in hospital fighting for life after he was injured in a home invasion in Brisbane on Sunday night.
Multiple news agencies have reported that Kefu is in a serious condition after he was stabbed in the abdomen during the incident at his Coorparoo home around 3am [AEST] on Monday morning.
According to Channel 9, the 47-year-old is undergoing emergency surgery at Brisbane’s Princess Alexander Hospital. The network also reported that one of the offenders was arrested by police at the scene, after he was held down by neighbours who had rushed to help the Kefu family.
It is believed Kefu’s wife, son and daughter were also injured, though not to same serious extent as the former Test No. 8.
“Police have two males in custody following a burglary and wounding in Cooparoo this morning,” a Queensland Police statement read.
“Police were called to Buena Vista Avenue at around 3am in relation to an incident.
“Early information suggested a number of males were disturbed breaking into a dwelling there and a violent altercation left four members of the house injured.
“One male was restrained and taken into custody at the scene.
“Further offenders fled in a car toward Woolloongabba.
“The four injured residents were transported to the Princess Alexander Hospital for treatment. A man in his 40s has serious injuries. Investigators urge witnesses to contact police.”
Kefu played 60 Tests for the Wallabies across a glittering international career. He was a key figure in Australia’s golden run between 1998 and 2002 when they lifted the Rugby World Cup, Bledisloe Cup and defeated the British & Irish Lions.
He is currently the coach of Tonga’s national side.
