UFC to implement fan-voted bonuses in bitcoin

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The UFC will be giving out more fight night bonuses to athletes beginning this weekend — with some added wrinkles.

Fans will get to vote on their favorite fighter of the card online starting Saturday at UFC 273 at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena, the UFC announced Thursday. The three winners will get bonuses, paid out in bitcoin. The new “Fan Bonus of the Night” will be sponsored by Crypto.com, the UFC’s cryptocurrency partner.

The winner will get $30,000 U.S. dollars in bitcoin, second place gets $20,000 in bitcoin and third will get $10,000 in bitcoin. Currently, the fan bonuses will only be doled out for pay-per-view cards.

Per a release, voting will take place at Crypto.com’s website. Fans will get three votes per card. Fans can vote on both fighters in a bout, if they wish. Voting will begin at the start of the pay-per-view broadcast and will end one hour after the card ends. Prelim fighters can get votes as well.

“Crypto.com has been an official UFC partner for less than a year, and I’m telling you they are already one of the best partners we’ve ever had,” UFC president Dana White said in a statement. “They’re constantly coming up with new ideas about how we can work together to connect with the fans. This new Fan Bonus of the Night is an awesome way to get fans more engaged in our events while rewarding the fighters for bad-ass performances.”

The Fan Bonus of the Night will join the regular, $50,000 fight-night bonuses the UFC gives out: two performance of the night bonuses and one fight of the night bonus.
