Farrell captain, Coles to make debut for England

Owen Farrell will captain England against Argentina on Sunday with Alex Coles making his Test debut.

With Courtney Lawes absent, Farrell skippers Eddie Jones’ team once again with Northampton second-row Coles earning his first Test cap in the pack.

The match is England’s first of four this autumn, and despite the team battling a host of injuries, Jones is able to pick Manu Tuilagi at outside centre alongside Farrell, with Marcus Smith at fly-half and Ben Youngs in at No.9. Freddie Steward, Jack Nowell and Joe Cokanasiga form the back three.

In the pack Ellis Genge, Luke Cowan-Dickie and Kyle Sinckler form the front-row with Coles partnering Jonny Hill in the second-row. Maro Itoje, Tom Curry and Billy Vunipola are the selected back-row.

Mako Vunipola and Jack Willis are named among the replacements where Northampton lock David Ribbans could earn his first cap if he gets his shot from the bench.

“It’s been a really good week of preparation and I’ve been very pleased with the squad’s attitude,” Jones said.

“They’ve shown real work ethic and a determination to improve and our leaders, Owen, Ellis and Jack have really lifted the team.

“We’re looking forward to a great game of rugby at a full Twickenham Stadium against a very good Argentina side. It’s been a tough time for rugby lately and we hope that these autumn games show just what a special game it is.”
