Edwards, Wolves agree on five-year rookie max

NBA

Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards has agreed on a five-year designated rookie maximum deal that could be worth up to $260 million, his agents Bill Duffy and Joe Branch of WME told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Monday.

Edwards, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 draft, averaged career bests of 24.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.6 steals per game last season while earning his first All-Star appearance.

He becomes the fourth player from the 2020 class to sign a five-year max extension, joining Tyrese Haliburton, LaMelo Ball and Desmond Bane.

Edwards, who turns 22 in August, starred in the playoffs last season despite the Timberwolves being eliminated in the first round by the eventual champion Denver Nuggets, averaging 31.6 points per game in the series and 158 points total. According to ESPN Stats & Information research, LeBron James was the only player younger than Edwards to score that many points in a five-game span in the playoffs.

The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Edwards, one of the league’s most explosive athletes, has already blossomed into a star during his three-year career. He has improved statistically in almost every category — points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, field goal percentage and 3-point percentage — in each season.

He also made strides on the defensive end of the floor, ranking third in total steals with 125. He was one of just three players (Dejounte Murray and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander) with at least 1,500 total points and 100 steals.

Edwards played the second-most minutes of any player this past season and has only missed 13 games across his three years in the NBA.

ESPN’s Tim MacMahon contributed to this story.
