PINEHURST, N.C. — An attorney representing four-time major champion Rory McIlroy filed a motion Tuesday to voluntarily dismiss a divorce petition that was filed on the golfer’s behalf in a Florida court last month.

McIlroy told The Guardian of London on Tuesday that he had reconciled with his wife of seven years, Erica Stoll. The case is closed, according to court records.

“There have been rumors about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate,” McIlroy said in the statement. “Responding to each rumor is a fool’s game. Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realized that our best future was as a family together. Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”

McIlroy, the third-ranked golfer in the world, will try to end a nearly 10-year drought without a major championship victory at this week’s U.S. Open, which starts Thursday at Pinehurst No. 2.

In the court filing in Palm Beach County family court on May 13 — three days before the first round of the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky — McIlroy’s attorney, Thomas Sasser, wrote that the marriage was irretrievably broken.

McIlroy asked for shared parental custody of their 3-year-old-daughter and for a judge to enforce a prenuptial agreement the couple signed March 7, 2017.

At the time, McIlroy confirmed the pending separation through his manager, Sean O’Flaherty.

McIlroy met his wife at the 2012 Ryder Cup. They started dating two years later, after McIlroy ended his relationship with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.

McIlroy and Stoll were married in Ireland in 2017.
