Andy Murray has confirmed his singles career is over, withdrawing from the individual event at the Paris 2024 Olympics to focus on the doubles competition with Dan Evans.
Two-time Olympic champion Murray had been entered into the men’s singles at Roland Garros, as well as the men’s doubles alongside Evans, but on Thursday confirmed that he would not be able to play in both competitions as he continues to recover from a back injury that ruled him out of the men’s singles draw at Wimbledon.
“I’ve take the decision to withdraw from the singles to concentrate on the doubles with Dan,” Murray said in a statement. “Really looking forward to getting started and representing GB one more time.”
Murray had an operation on his back shortly before the major in west London, and had told reporters in Paris on Wednesday that he was unlikely to participate in the individual tournament in the French capital as a result despite his condition having improved.
He added on Wednesday that he planned to prioritise the doubles as he felt it gave Team GB a better chance of a medal.
Murray and Evans learn who their first-round opponent is later on Thursday.
Murray won singles gold at London 2012, beating Roger Federer in the final, and successfully defended his title in Rio four years later defeating Juan Martin del Potro.
He also has a mixed doubles silver from London partnering Laura Robson.
