Storey beats Gaugain at World Championships

Sarah Storey has beaten Paralympic rival Heidi Gaugain to win gold at the 2024 Para-cycling Road World Championships in Switzerland in the Women’s C4-C5 individual time trial.

Storey, 46, completed the 29.9km course in 45 minutes and 25 seconds, finishing 1:36 clear of France’s Gaugain to win her 38th Para world title.

It was a successful title defence for Storey, who won this event in Glasgow last year.

“To hit out the way I did today, I was really chuffed. The course was so much fun,” Storey told BBC Sport.

“It was great and I was really glad I had the legs to put in the performance as well.”

In the women’s B individual time trial, Ireland’s Katie-George Dunlevy, alongside pilot Linda Kelly, were victorious. They finished in a time of 43:14.

It was a British second and third, with Sophie Unwin, alongside pilot Jenny Holl, placing second and Lora Fachie, with pilot Corrine Hall, third.

In the Road World Championships that run alongside the Para-cycling event, Australia’s Grace Brown cruised to victory in the women’s elite individual time trial.

She finished 16 seconds clear of Demi Vollering of the Netherlands while Great Britain’s Anna Henderson was seventh.
