F1 testing day two – Ferrari’s Sainz quickest as sun sets in Bahrain

There is now quite a delay to repair the drain damaged on the entry kerbing at Turn 11, but the red flag didn’t come out quickly enough to avoid Charles Leclerc hitting the loose metal on track in his Ferrari.

Fernando Alonso had darted to the left of something on entry into Turn 11, catching the eye of those stood trackside, including Carlos Sainz and his father. Sainz went to tell the marshals about the piece of debris on track, but as he was pointing it out and saying a yellow flag was needed, Leclerc hit it. The gap in the drain was then noticed, and after more discussions the red flag came out.

Slight flashbacks for Ferrari of Las Vegas last year, when a loose water-valve cover was hit by Sainz and caused huge damage to the chassis. At least in this case, it appears to be more minor damage to Leclerc’s car, but the drain on the entry kerb will need replacing and securing because drivers run over it regularly as they open up the entry to that corner.
