Bolts’ Herbert active despite high ankle sprain

NFL

PITTSBURGH — Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is active for Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers despite sustaining a high right ankle sprain last week.

Herbert went through warmups Sunday, throwing to receivers and jogged without a limp before the Chargers made the decision to make their franchise quarterback active.

The Chargers will have three quarterbacks active on Sunday; Easton Stick and Taylor Heinicke will back up Herbert.

The Chargers, however, will be without their top receiver, Joshua Palmer, who has an elbow and calf injury.

Herbert suffered the ankle injury that had put his status for Sunday’s game in question in the third quarter of the Chargers’ Week 2 win over the Carolina Panthers.

This is the second injury Herbert has dealt with this season. During training camp, he spent two weeks in a walking boot while dealing with a plantar fascia injury to his right foot. Herbert said Friday that he has recovered from that injury.
